Promoting tobacco-free communites
preventing youth smoking, and
improving the health of the entire Capital Region
Community Action is Working!
In New York State:
- Between 2000 to 2016, the High School youth cigarette smoking rate decreased by 84% to an all-time low of 4.3% .
- Between 2000 to 2014, the Middle School youth smoking rate decreased by 88% to 1.2%.
- Between 2000 to 2015, the adult smoking rate decreased by nearly 30% to 15.2% .
BUT. . .The tobacco industry still spends more than a half million dollars per day to market their deadly products in New York State.
AS A RESULT. . . Youth use of other tobacco products (including cigars, cigarillos, hookah and smokeless tobacco) is 10.6%, more than twice the rate cigarette smoking; their use of electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS, which includes e-cigarettes and vape pens) doubled between 2014 and 2016 from 10.5% to 20.6%, making ENDS the most commonly used tobacco products by youth.
AND. . .The rate of adult smoking among those with household incomes below $25,000 is 22%; 22% among those with less than a high school degree; and 28% among those with poor mental health. More than 90% of all adult smokers started smoking before the age of 18.
To prevent youth smoking
and promote healthy communities,
we need your help.
