The public health community reacted with alarm and dismay yesterday after Albany County Executive Dan McCoy, citing “numerous legal defects,” vetoed the local law that would have ended the sale of tobacco in pharmacies. Albany County Legislator Tim Nichols, the sponsor of the law that was passed by the Albany County Legislature on August 11 and Judy Rightmyer, Director of the Capital District Tobacco-Free Coalition issued statements in response. Tim Nichols’ Statement here and Judy Rightmyer’s here.

The veto was widely covered in the media: Times Union, Troy Record, Spotlight NewsWNYT, WRGB, and WTEN. You can read County Executive McCoy’s veto message here.

County Legislator Nichols will be weighing the viability of an override vote from the Legislature.
